Now Be Here began in 2016 when nearly 1,000 women-identifying artists gathered for a historic photograph in downtown LA. This powerful visual inspired a series of similar events across the U.S. While the original Now Be Here project was simply a photograph and website showing the world the dynamic community of nearly 3000 women-identifying artists in LA, NY, Miami area and DC/MD/VA areas what emerged from that day was a clear need for more artist-led community building and support.
Now Be Here: Artist Infrastructure Initiative seeks to amplify, connect, and establishes a support network of women-identifying artists and allies. Through a series of public programs, upgraded website, reunion photograph, and resource fair, we aim to provide a toolkit of skills to empower women artists for the success and longevity of their practice.
The current pandemic has put in-person support on hold and we have pivoted to making the website a visual directory of women-identifying and non-binary artists regardless of participation in the events. The website is also open to artists who have died so their work will not be forgotten. The site needs funds to complete development and regular maintenance.
We are not asking artists to donate as many artists have lost their day jobs as well as exhibition opportunities. Your support will go a long way to helping create a way for artists to find resources and advocate for their practice. Other artist directory websites charge the artists to be listed, this one will not.
The original project was about being seen and showing the world this dynamic community, with your support we would like to share their work.
